Biography of Professor (Dr) Md.Shamiul Islam

Currently serving as Director of Mycobacterial Disease Control (MBDC)as well as Line Director of TB and Leprosy Diseases Prevention and Control Programme (TLCP) and National AIDS/STD Programme under Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh

  • The pioneer to first startGene Xpert system based COVID-19 testing in the subcontinent by involving RT-PCR technique
  • He led the Joint Monitoring Mission of the National TB control programme in Bangladesh as well as coordinated Global Fund related technical guidance and support of World Health Organization’s Global TB Programme
  • Commenced ‘Zero Leprosy initiative’ under country’s National Leprosy Programme to eradicate Leprosy in Bangladesh by 2030 with the able supervision of Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
  • He is among the initial person to serve as Principal of Mukda Medical College, the newly established public medical college in Dhaka
  • Proudly served his parent institute, ‘Sir Salimullah Medical College’ being in the position of Vice Principal.
  • He served as Director (Hospital) of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), as an officer of Central Health Services and provided technical advice on all medical and public health matters to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Former Professor of Pathology at National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH), the only institute of Bangladesh which extend modern specialized medical and surgical treatment to complicated chest and TB patients.
  • He served as Director of National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital(NICRH), the only tertiary level center of the country engaged in multidisciplinary cancer patient management.
  • He served as an active member of Central Committee in Bangladesh Chatra League (BSL). Later on he was elected as president of Bangladesh Chattra League at Sir Salimullah Medical College wing & Pro-VP Sir Salimullah Medical College Students Union.
  • He was former Central Committee member & Social Welfare Secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and Founder Secretary of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (SWACHIP) and devoted his time to implement the ‘Din Bodoler Sanad’ strategy of the government to develop and strengthen health care policies.
  • He is a MBBS graduate from the eminent institution ‘Sir Salimullah Medical College’.
